At Slick Lips we love beauty products, and it’s hard to throw them out sometimes. But beauty products can harbor harmful bacteria and cause infection if not thrown away or cleaned properly. So here are some popular beauty products and their general expiration dates to help keep you safe!

2-3 Months

Liquids tend to grow more bacteria, and most liquid applicators you double dip every time you use it.

Mascara – continue use of this product can result in an eye infection.

Liquid Eyeliner

Loofah – the fact that this is wet constantly means that it is a breeding ground for bacteria. Not replacing your loofah can cause back and chest acne.

6 Months – 1 Year

Lip Gloss – Risks of using out of date lip gloss include cold sores. If you get a cold sore while using any lip products, throw them away.

Liquid Foundation/Concealer – Expired foundation has been tested to have traces of staphylococcus and streptococcus. (1)

Powder or oil-based stick products can have a longer expiration date do to the fact it has less water.

Makeup Brushes

Old brushes or unwashed brushes can contaminate your makeup and spread bacteria. Wash your brushes at least once a week.

Makeup Sponges

A makeup sponge should be cleaned or thrown away after every application. Even if you clean your sponge every day you should throw them away after a month.
